ATi Catalyst Drivers

This thread will be dedicated to ATi drivers and feedback thereof. This thread will replace the current combined nVidia and ATi driver thread which will be closed and no longer kept updated, although will remain as a reference point for older drivers, basically anything dated before the first set posted here in.

I will try to cover both official and modified driver (of note) relases in this thread and give feedback and help on drivers where possible since I can test the new releases on the still very popular Radeon 9800 Pro in my second rig.

ATI today posted the fourth "certified" driver package in this year. Catalyst 5.4 comes with updates for Windows 2000 and XP. Major new features include a HDTV wizard that allows the configuration of a PC display for HDTV. This driver is also the first Catalyst driver certified for Windows XP x64 and will bring some "pretty good performance gains" compared to the 64-bit beta drivers, according to ATI. The company said that also the Linux version of Catalyst integrates and number of fixes.

The Windows fix-list includes issues in 3DMark2001, Pacific Fighters, Sail Simulator 4, SolidWorks 2004, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Corrected Linux issues affect Unreal Tournament 2004 as well as Viewperf 7.1.1 and Red Hat Enterprise 3.0 version 2.

****EDIT: if ur gonna post in this thread, please post a link to said drivers. Posts without links to drivers or containing feedback will be removed in future.

Download the new ATI Catalyst 5.4 drivers from here:

ATI Catalyst 5.6 review and tests at Anandtech. Also previews of the 5.7 and 5.8 Catalyst drivers.

Quote:
Final Words
We are definitely looking forward to the new features coming down the line. For now, the Catalyst Control Center has become a useable feature with the improved load time and the decreased lag in changing options. We feel that the interface still needs to be massaged in order for the enthusiast crowd to embrace it. Right now, if you know what you are doing, there is really no compelling incentive to install CCC when the control panel works fine.

It is commendable that ATI have begun pushing their mobility driver along side their desktop Catalyst offering, but unless most OEMs opt in on the program, the end users won't see any benefit.

The video options now available in Catalyst are getting better, but we would like to see more finely grained control and a useful preview. If we could select a preview source and play with the options, that would be more compelling. The issue is that every video clip is unique and responds differently to settings. Of course, the current preview shows ATI's motion adaptive mode to be the best option, but in some cases, we may see better results from something else.

Better control of HDTV modes is long over due. NVIDIA gave it a shot a few months ago, but even their controls are still too clunky. We will be interested to see what ATI can do with this. Adding the Media Center Extensions is also a good effort to make. Easily adjusting TV settings is a difficult task in itself, but doing it via a 10-foot UI is even better.

It goes without saying that we are disappointed in the performance of Catalyst 5.6. We had been expecting at least a small improvement in our OpenGL titles, but none of the games that we tested showed any improvement (less than 1% improvement falls into the "noise" category).

While Lock On may have shown some significant improvement and application specific optimizations are of interest, a single game gaining performance isn't as compelling as what a general improvement in OpenGL performance would be.
Bit dissapointing (although A LOT of claims of improved 3D Mark 2005 performance) considering the hype behind the 5.6 drivers, but the preview of the 5.7 and 5.8 drivers look very interesting.

On the other hand ATI Heaven have posted a preview of the 5.6 drivers showing some nice Open GL performance improvements. Obviously trudge through the pro ATI jargon and there is some fact in there, although a somewhat questionable choice of system (Intel) and card (X800 Pro) but id have thought the trend would continue thru teh range and on AMD based systems.

The latest CATALYST 5.7 are out

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27

New Features
This section provides information on new features introduced in the latest release of the Catalyst™ Software Suite. New features include:

1080p Display Support Option
Catalyst™ Control Center Un-install Option
1080p Display Support Option
Catalyst™ 5.7 introduces support enhancement to the display support options found in the Digital Panel Properties of the Catalyst™ Control Center. This enhancement will offer a 1080p standard format option for a displays that are reporting incomplete or incorrect capabilities in their EDID information. This feature will be supported on ATI Radeon® X300 products and above, and will be supported under the Microsoft Windows XP, 2000 and the next release of the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating systems.

Catalyst™ Control Center Un-install Option
Catalyst™ 5.7 introduces a clean un-install option for the Catalyst™ Control Center. When a user chooses to remove the Catalyst™ Control Center, all desktop shortcuts, user defined profiles, and hotkeys will be completely removed from the system. All custom setting will need to be recreated when the Catalyst™ Control Center is installed once again.

Performance Improvements
Enhancements to our driver's internal memory management bring significant benefits to 64MB and 128MB framebuffer configurations in Catalyst™ 5.7.

The resulting performance gains are most apparent in high resolution, everything on modes, when running applications that use a significant amount of graphics memory. Examples include:

5-15% gains in 3DMark05 on some products
20-60% gain in Far Cry Regulator across multiple settings
25-60% gains in Half-Life 2 at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF
40-60% gains in UT2004 at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF
50-100% improvement in Comanche4 at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF
50-200% gains in certain ShaderMark tests at high resolution

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: The exact magnitude of these performance benefits will vary depending on the product configuration, clock speeds and available system memory. All of the changes noted are specific to 64MB and 128MB framebuffer configurations. Performance of 256MB and 512MB boards is already very good at these settings.

Additionally, an improvement in our OpenGL driver brings a gain of approximately 10-15% to the Unigraphics test in SPECviewperf. This improvement is not framebuffer-specific.

Omega 2.6.75a based on Catalyst 5.10a

Omega ATI Catalyst 2.6.75a
based on Catalyst 5.10a

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1230

These drivers are based on the Catalyst 5.10a drivers from ATI. They include a customized version of ATI Tray Tools instead of Radlinker.

Ok, the new drivers based on the Cat 5.10a are here (Yes, decided to jump the official 5.10).

What's New in Omega Drivers?

v2.6.75 - based on the Catalyst 5.10a Beta drivers.

* Added support for x1800 cards.
* Enabled Adaptive AA by default for x1800 cards, disabled for the rest.
* Added 1280x800 resolution for both laptop and desktop cards.
* Reconstructed some tweaks to prevent any future compatibility issues.
* Fixed some minor resolution conflicts for laptops and integrated chipsets.
* Fixed a "Deja-Vu" problem in the installer related to Multires. =D
* Added the option to uninstall ATT, separate from the Omega uninstaller in the Start Menu.
* Updated to ATI Tray Tools v1.0.4.780

Note: I have not tried these yet but intend to the moment I am home, if I remember I will post some feedback.

Catalyst 5.11

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27

New Features
This section provides information on new features introduced in the Catalyst® 5.11 software suite. New features include
Adaptive Anti-Aliasing
ATI Catalyst® 5.11 introduces Adaptive Anti-Aliasing support for the ATI Radeon® X1800 and Radeon® X1300. A check box called Enable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing within the 3D option of the Graphics Settings, found in the Catalyst® Control Center. A slider bar is also provided and provides two setting; Performance, or Quality. The slider bar is grayed out when Adaptive Anti-Aliasing is disabled.

Stretch Desktop Support for ATI FireMV™ Products
ATI Catalyst® 5.11 introduces Stretch desktop support for both dual and quad output ATI FireMV™ products. This support allows for the operating system to see the display output as a single large display. This allows for the operating system's task bar stretch across all display devices connected to the ATI FireMV™ product line.

Overlay Theater Mode Enhancement
ATI Catalyst® 5.11 introduces an enhancement to Overlay Theater Mode. Overlay Theater Mode will allow for video mode to enabled automatically when a TV is connected as a secondary display device. Enabling video mode automatically sets the display to 720x480 and improves the video playback on standard Televisions.

Catalyst® Control Center Enhancement
ATI Catalyst® 5.11 introduces a Catalyst® Control Center enhancement that will allow users to switch between display modes. When using a multiple monitor system the feature will provide hot-key shortcuts that will allow users to switch from clone mode to extended desktop mode, and the ability switch between display devices

CrossFire™ and the ATI Radeon® X1300 series
Catalyst® 5.11 introduces CrossFire™ support for the ATI Radeon® X1300 series. CrossFire™ provides the ultimate multi-GPU performance for all 3D applications by permitting users to run 2 Radeon® X1300 graphic cards in the same system with no special interconnection required between the two cards (other than your PCI Express Motherboard).

Performance Improvements
As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations.

The ATI Radeon® X1800 has massive gains in OpenGL when 4X Anti-aliasing is enabled. Increases include:

Doom 3 performance improvement of up to 38%
Quake 4 performance improvement of up to 60%
Older OpenGL titles such as Quake 3, Arena, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, have performance improvements of up to 50%

The ATI Radeon® X1300 has a performance improvement of 10-15% in Quake 4.

The Vertex Shader has performance improvement of 3-5% across multiple products.
