Running the SMP and GPU client together

This is something I have tried and it seems to be netting me around 1000ppd on a Dual core system more so its worth doing, Quad core users should see a larger increase in performande.
TGK asked how to do it so I thought a guide might be in order.

Now im guessing most people who want to do this are allready running the GPU client so ill start from here.
Rerun the config on the GPU client, iirc create a shortcut with -config and this should do it for you (only use this shortcut to change the config, once changed go back to the standard exe)3, now set everything as you would but under advanced where it says priority it should be set to idle, change this to [b]low[b].

Next download the SMP client from here and install.
Run the setup as normal and under advanced set the core priority to idle.
Now to get the SMP client to use all the cores avaliable (4 max per client) you need to create a shortcut and add -smp.
Run this shortcut when you load the client, one of the first things it will say if working right is 2 / 4 cores detected.

The reason for setting the GPU to low and the CPU to Idle is that it then means the CPU client doenst steal and CPU time the GPU client needs to do its stuff, as the GPU clients generaly pump out more PPD this client is the one that needs priority over the CPU.

The SMP client will then use any spare CPU cycles thats avaliable to it.

Doing this you maximise the PPD you can get from a machine and nothing is sat idling away

To check if this gets you more PPD use FAHmon before and after using the SMP client to see if / what increase you get.

Hope this helps, any questions just ask and ill try my best to answer them / update this as nessasary.

Re: Running the SMP and GPU client together

According to the FAQ http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...userguide.html, its definatly -config, you have created a shortcut, clicked propertys and then added -Config to the target box yea?

Win, let me know if it ups your output, should do as you have a quad core CPU

Ugh, the SMP slient won't load up.

It just pops up, then shuts off again. Any ideas?

Right, hold the phone. I think I have them both running OK. Just want to make sure as you may have contradicted yourself in the guide...

Re: Running the SMP and GPU client together

You said that you should run the GPU on Low and the CPU on idle, but on the paragraphs above you said to run both on Low.

Yes so to clarify, Low priority on the GPU client and Idle on the SMP CPU client.

I'm thinking this is meant to be, but my SMP client is running considerably slower than before yet was running fine when set to low.

Yea it will be, because the GPU client uses a fair bit of that CPU time , is the SMP client using all 4 cores?
