Aren't All Games Technically RPG Games? Video Game Philosophy

Well, like the title asks, aren't all games technically RPG games?
Before I start, this thread is a general Video Game Philosophy thread.

RPG stands for Role Playing Game. Now, if you take this literally, then every game is an RPG because you take the role of something or someone. Even in just crappy flash games, you take the role of something. Now, I know that by definition RPG uses elements like leveling and certain other features, but...

By definition I would say role playing is about taking an active role as a character, where you have story behind him, what he is doing, etc. This obviously happens in the RPG game genre, and more and more other genres like shooters.

Not: You are a small square, avoid the falling rocks. That by definition is not role playing, as you are a square but you don't know who he actually is.
