Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

So, I want to get a real computer, a desktop. Obviously for gaming Being a total tech noob though I have no idea what's good, how to put it together, or anything at all really.

So, a list of the important things I want:
  • Want it to play, most importantly, Rift on high settings - here is a thread from beta about min reqs, from what I gather this shouldn't be too hard to knock this one
  • Want it to play a couple more recent games, I believe the most relevant one I have *atm* is Bioshock Infinite
  • Want it to have some actual space to store games! The craptop I have is severely lacking, constantly needing to uninstall stuff to get other stuff on, and then changing it back when I want to play the older game etc etc. I also want lots of music (again, this one shouldn't be too hard, I *think* I'm reading it right when I say I'm currently running off 176GB HDD cause I f'ed something up right at the start, the total woulda been 441GB or something. I may be reading it wrong though cause that's a weird number)
  • Only want a single monitor, but of a reasonable size. Most of what was at the LAN looked good
  • Want it to be cheap as possible without gimping current/future gaming - I'm expecting to have to shell out a bit though, of course.
  • If it needs building, someone to do it or help me do it would be grand

Cheers in advance for any suggestions!

I'm not sure what is a good amount tbh. I have a decent amount available, I'd say a few hundred so long as it lasts Possibly flexible to do more

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

Sounds like a great reason to have another LAN, to be honest...

Do you have any parts that are potentially scavenge-able, such as a pre-existing case?

I know you said you're not sure what's a good amount, so let's try it this way.

1,000 would build a pretty epic machine, how much, upto that point would you say you have available for this machine?

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

People around here are always selling/have things going spare. For my whole rig I've spent about 300 odd on JUST my motherboard + cpu, the rest I bought from others really cheap

Any excuse is a great reason for another LAN!

I have no desktop or parts at all, unfortunately. Everything would have to be new.

So, having checked, I have plenty available. 1k for an epic machine sounds 2-ways - awesome machine would be awesome, but I wouldn't like to feel I was wasting money on something I wouldn't use That said, I was recently looking at Alienware with my ex-gf (not that I really understood it, but she said it was top end) and that was more than 1k for a high grade laptop. I trust the people here wouldn't get me ripped off

The problem with that, for me at least, is that I would have no idea what to look for, and then no idea how to assemble it when I have it all Again, if someone is willing to help me on that front, eternal thanks, cookies and LAN "favours".

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

Stay away from Alienware at all costs. Completely useless for what you're paying.

Building it yourself will save you a lot of money, or even having it built for you via another company. Don't buy pre-built.

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

There's a few options as I see it, with regards to actually putting it together:

1) Guess (bad idea!)
2) Get someone to give me directions via webcam or something
3) Get someone to come down and help out, or find someone nearby
4) Bring it to a LAN in pieces and get someone to do it there
5) See next section below..

I'm thinking 2 or 3 are smart options, I should be able to work a bit of charm at HEXUS forums if needed, I'm sure there must be someone from down my way over there.

---
With regards to original post, anyone have any thoughts on actual stuff to get? I was wondering if choosing parts, all from one company (eg Scan) and then having them actually put it together, would be a decent idea, or if it that falls under "pre-built". If that's ok, if someone could post a linky or something of a good setup, would be cool
(again, I'm total noob at this so I really don't know what would be worth having or not - it's not that I'm being lazy or anything!)

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

Well, my rig...

i3-2100
8Gb Ram
and
HD6950 2Gb

Plays everything I have thrown at it (BS:I included) on High at 1920x1080.

I belive that these days its less about your CPU and much more about your GFX crad/RAM...

I could (and probably am) wrong though. lol.

Re: Wanted: One gamer's pc, advice

After a short discussion with Al on his post, and a little thinking - Al said the only "bad" thing in the list he made was that "the CPU is a little weak". I'd rather go all out and get decent stuff to start with. The thing is, to my untrained eye that list looks somehow... empty, maybe it's really like that I dunno (like I coulda sworn stuff like audio came from another piece, sound card or something...)

As for other "accessories", like monitor and keyboard - monitor as I said, a decent single one, something like many at the LAN were. I have no idea how big that was, but some crude searching showed up ranges like 23-27"? Again, Al gave me a little advice - 1080p, avoid anything with just a VGA input. Keyboard should be simple, can get a normal or cheap-gamer one, so long as it has keys I'm happy. Mouse I have. Speakers not bothered about *atm*.

So my potential idea, is if I could ask someone to actually buy everything and put it together to work fully (as if it was a pre-built), and I pay them for parts (and labour if needed), and then collect it at some point on a day trip Would anyone be willing to do that for me?

Kris gave me a crazy idea at the end of the LAN, telling me about someone who brought their stuff in a big suitcase. Well, if I could bring the main computer parts (the stuff that comes in the "tower" thing) and kb+m and fit it into a suitcase, I could probably borrow a monitor from someone for next LAN So having the casing fit into one of the smaller, wheel-able suitcases would be a big bonus.

Ryans rule of thumb, make sure it equals or betters consoles, so thats 8 threads, 8gb ram and 1200+ shader cores.

Put it together yourself, it's not remotely as hard as you probably think and it'll save you time in future if you want to upgrade/rebuild etc. There's loads of vids on YT if you need something to follow.

What are threads and shader cores? :O 8gb ram I think I understand at least, Al's post had a 1x8gb memory thingy.

Thanks Cronos, watched a vid or two and it seems helpful (although still a lot of numbers and letters I don't really understand).

I'm still not sure on parts though - again, I'd rather pay more now to get the upgrades already, rather than starting off weak and then needing to upgrade again later (eg, the CPU which Al said was weak). Watching a video, it said Optical Drive is an important part too (as I understood it, it's the general CD/DVD etc reader?).
Assuming all the other parts are gonna be a-ok for my needs, what would be good CPU and Optical, then?

At risk of sounding... something bad, please try not to speak geek to me, because I don't understand it And I'm only going on about it several times as I want to get it right

Oh. One more thing. Can someone suggest a monitor? As I said, the kinda size that are generally at LANs are good sized. So far the only info I really have is "avoid anything with just a VGA input", but again, it doesn't really mean a lot to me :/

CPU wise, right now there isn't really much reason to go for anything over an i5.

And I'm quite happily getting by with an i3.
