i5 or i7? Advice on replacing an FX-6100

Right,

I could well be in with a chance of replacing my old FX-6100 in the new year.

Thing is, do I go i5 or i7? I have an older LGA1155 board I could re-purpose for the job, or would going to a newer socket be better for me?

Budget would be as low as possible, but then again, for the right upgrade I guess spending now is better, right? lol.

Any advice on what to go for would be great.

Overclocking ability would be nice, but not essential. As would HT on the chip (i know that means i7 only)

So what's the sweet spot on an 1155 platform then?

I assume a K series for O/Cing the nads off it?

A 3570K would do you just fine. Even a 2500K would be good. the perfamance difference between the 2500K and something like the 6600K is only about 15 - 20% at best in games. A 3570K is also a good choice if you can get a good price on one but definatly dont spend more that 100 on either.

Re: i5 or i7? Advice on replacing an FX-6100

I would say take the best upgrade you can for the hardware. In the past i've found that over time the needs of the unit have changed (as they always do) and finding a better upgrade for that machine at a later date has been a nightmare. Personally i think its best to max now.... while you can.

Also i recently dumped AMD cpus for an Intel i7 6700k, omg i love intel now.

Which is funny, as ive been an AMD fan boi since the K6.

Similar here, always had AMD as a preference, but Intel are killing it recently.

AMDs new chip look pretty good though..
