Need a new Car

Hi everyone
I haven't posted this in the car forum mainly because it's a "life" thing

Seems my car which needs a lot of work doing on it isn't worth getting fixed. We are supposed to be going on a short break this weekend to see family and a driving holiday aboard in the summer.

Looking for a car which will have to be able to
  • Carry 4 people
  • Hold a electric wheelchair in the back
  • Automatic
  • Petrol or Diesel (don't matter)
Estates
People carriers
Maybe 4x4

At least 30mpg on open road

Being a bit unexpected we can only afford approx 1000 at the moment
So ideas please

Also, if anyone is interested, i will be on autotrader all night (on MSN and Skype) if anyone wants to join in and help look

Some ideas so far

VW Passat Estate
Audi A4 TDi
Astra, Vectra Estates
Volvo S40
Vauxhall omega estate
Volvo v50

The current car is a
Toyota Estima (which is a Previa in the UK)

Re: Need a new Car

Oh no way, its packed up indefinitely then

Volvo estates are the way to go if your wanting an estate car, they just have so much space its unreal. Weve got the S60 and its like a giant sofa on wheels, so comfortable and easy to drive.

I shall have a think an an ask around for you hun see if i can come up with anything.

Also theres the Mitsubushi Galant/Legnum if imported. These are apparently quite roomy and you can pick them up reletively cheap too

Re: Need a new Car

The Omega is the car of choice for me out of the ones you list and you'd get a good one for a grand. You may recall that I used to have one.

I've had all sorts of estates including the old workhorse Volvo 244 and the Omega has more space in the back than any of them.

At lans I used to put the back seats down and have a double inflatable mattress in the back.

Mine was a 3 litre which was a bit thirsty. I used to get 30mpg on the motorway and about 20-25 around town. The 2.5 is a bit better and almost as powerful.

If you keep your eye open you might find an lpg converted one. It's a popular conversion and gives you a fuel bill equivalent to getting 50mpg.

Easily the most comfortable car I've ever had too. So many toys and so much comfort. I drove from Peterborough to Devon (about 4 hours) without stopping one time with no discomfort at all.

Re: Need a new Car

I wouldn't go for an Omega because the tax costs loads.

Go for a volvo
pro's
Really nice to drive (my mum had a 2.0i and a 3.0 turbo both really nice to drive)
More air bags than a boncy castle so very safe
Most come with heated seats and loads of extras
Powerfull so you can pull caravan if needed
Very Cheap (people just don't buy em)
Lots of room in the front and back
Most have an old person as the original owner
Well made

con's
Can be expensive to fix compared to cars like ford
Some people think there ugle

Not Pre 2001 it wont.

Also that would apply to pretty much most things if they were Petrol + Automatic that are registered after Mid 2001.

Rash, I would agree with Betty that for the pricepoint an Omega is definatly worth a look. I had one (admitidly a saloon, but still) the estate form ticks all the boxes you want, just a few things to watch out for. When I get back I'll have a proper look on autotrader/Pistonheads etc, and chuck a few suggestions your way.

Re: Need a new Car

The other good thing about the Omega is that because it's a Vauxhall spares are plentiful and cheap.

Here's a few pictures of mine to give you an idea of the space.
