To Defrag or To Not Defrag...

Im currently involved in an argument about this process...

My opinion is that defragging a drive is no longer something that EVER needs to be done.

Its a throwback to old file and disk management from the old DOS with Windows on top days, its no longer needed as Windows manages thing pretty well.

Opinions?

Re: To Defrag or To Not Defrag...

I have a SSD, your discussion is invalid

But really in theory it should help very slightly in that the drive is not having to read bits of data from random spots on the platters?

Re: To Defrag or To Not Defrag...

And by slightly, we are taking negligible performance increases?

I have not seen a performance increase from it in years...

Re: To Defrag or To Not Defrag...

I think it depends on what you're doing. In the modern day, drives seldom get full enough to fragment that much but if there's a lot of random file access such as in a database server then it's worth doing for performance. For most home uses, you're unlikely to notice a huge amount of difference.

Like Azrael said, if it's an SSD then all bets are off.
