Chromebooks as an off-machine

I'm currently looking into investing in a Chromebook as a "I'm going downstairs for half an hour and want to do some work" type of PC.

So what I mainly want it for is:
  • Google Drive (writing/storage)
  • Tweetdeck
  • Forums
  • Reddit
  • Gmail

As all of these are cloud-based, I was thinking the Chromebook would probably be a good choice, saving some money and not faffing around with a slow OS with unnecessary bloat ware.

Just wondering what your guys opinions were? Chromebook worth it? If not, what would be better? If it is, do you have any recommendations?

If that is what you need it for, then a Chromebook is bang on. The soon-to-be-son-in-law has one that my stepdaughter bought him for Christmas as an import from the US and it's done him fine for just this kind of thing.

Re: Chromebooks as an off-machine

I love my chromebook with a passion. Never failed me, and seeing as I move about a fair bit it gets a lot of use. My only recommendation would be to find one with a better screen. There's a new toshiba chromebook with an HD IPS screen but it's difficult to get hold of in the UK.

Re: Chromebooks as an off-machine

I own this Acer: www(.)mbreviews(.)com/acer-c720-chromebook.
If you don't want to play Windows games or use a programming language then this is one of the best cheap and light laptops.
I use it for surfing the web, read emails, skype and other "casual" stuff and I am happy with it.
The Chrome OS is a bit different if you are used to iOS or Windows but it is pretty easy to learn, in a couple of hours you will master it.

Thanks Larry (and everyone else).

I've picked up an Asus C300M. I'll let you know how it goes!

I could really get into a 1000 system with those frame rates. I sure would like to see a build sheet so I could check out building one myself.

Thanks for the help Ntrudr

Chromebooks as an off ma

I remember from an old Mother Earth magazine where this man and woman were living in a Bus. The woman made her own clothing on a Singer sewing machine that the motor had been replaced with 12 volt motor off of a car or truck heater fan and was hose clamped in place of the 110 volt motor. Same pulley fit if I remember correctly. The motors on a lot of sewing machines are exposed right out in the open and would be easy to replace. A car battery deep cycle would be ideal but car barrery could work for a whilea solar panel to recharge and you could do a couple of hours before you need recharging. If you hunted around now for a replacement 12 volt motor , you might find something that is really close toa factory replacement ,you never know.
