HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

I dont play over 1080p and probably never will.

But, where to go from the 6950?

Its becoming long in the tooth now and I really feel its time for an upgrade.

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

TBF It still plays most stuff really well, just with Batman Arkan Knight saying a 7950 is a minimum, Im wondering for how long.

Is the R9 series worth a look:?

Means nothing, it's a crappy port and from everything I've read it runs like shit no matter the card.

They look good, tweaked rebrands with higher clock rates and more ram.

Even at 1080p 2gb can be a limit, no reason these days to get anything less than 4gb which will see you through to 4k easily.

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

Your going to want to look at the R9 380 if you want to see any decent performance boost from your current card, though the 390 looks the better deal to me.

Wait a month or so though for the prices to drop

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

Right, so hang fire for a while, but aim for double the memory I currently have.

As for the PC itself, where would I be best spending money?

I have an FX6100 currently, I guess that needs to be replaced at some point.

However, I cant seem to find any benchmarks that show me a good upgrade path.

Im considering the FX8350, as I think thats the fastest chip my existing board will take.

Or, would I be better just selling the existing board and chip and going back to the i series chips?

Have to disagree with you there! when i was running my 1GB 6950 I didn't have any trouble running 1920x1200

I would keep the chip for a bit longer and clock the nuts off it.
If the board is compatible one of the 8 core FX chips would be a good upgrade path.

Cool, As I always say to anyone looking at a AMD build, get the cheapest 8 core chip and clock the fuck out of it

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6950 which, since my CPU upgrade to an i5 clocked to 4.6Ghz has become the bottleneck in the system

What would be a good match for my CPU? I only play at 1080p as I use my TV as a monitor so higher resolutions aren't important to me at all but I'm finding that games like Witcher 3 stutter and lag even with the eye candy turned down.

I'd like to arrive at a point where the GPU and CPU complement each other rather than one or the other hold things back.

Any suggestions from you hardware experts?

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

GTX 970 or a R9 390 I would say, 390 just seems to edge out the 970 and has 8gb memory vs 4gb on the 970.
The 970 though used a lot less power, 275w vs 165w though.

Re: HD6950 2Gb - Where to go next?

390 does look good. I've got permission from SWMBO so we're good to go.

Is any make particularly better (or worse) than any other at the moment?
