Re: The Mojave Experiment

lol.. So, how exactly did they disguise Vista enough to fool people?

Seems a bit of a marketing ploy by M$ to me.

Re: The Mojave Experiment

Yeah, I was all 'Never Never Never' at first. But since using Vista on the Mother in Laws laptop all weekend, I quite like it.

Main thin is you can get rid of all the crap addons/fancy graphics and make it look like XP.

I think that IS the biggest issue with it.

To make it functional and useable you have to turn all the crap off. Average joe might get along fine...but i believe its a royal pita until you tweak the crap outta it.

I dont have first hand experience of vista yet...Im not that desperate to jump ship.

thats point 2 against vista as well.

I needs one of IBM Deep (throat, crevice, something) supercomputers just to run it optimally with the whole w000 aero interface.

The whole take up of vista seems to be enthusiasts (which I would classify the majority of this board as ) and average joe who are punted the pc from the likes of comet and pcworld etc..

Business's are cautious at best and slow on the uptake, taking advantage of downgrade rights...

and rumours from the MS camp seem to suggest the lifecycle of vista is going to be the shortest yet, especially given the slow uptake.

Speak to MS direct and they spout the billions of vista licenses they've sold, but what isnt reported is how many of those were downgraded.

There is no trick, DX10 does not work with XP, there are certain hacks for games like crysis to enable some of the features but they do not enable DX10

You can disable that.

As another note
how many of us a number of years back installed XP
and took all the fancy features out to make it look like windows 2000

a lot of it is down to what your PC can do
when XP came out, no one wanted their PCs doing all the fancy stuff
since they have upgraded, they don't disable them any more

same will happen with Vista

Re: The Mojave Experiment

I think most people are sick of having to do all the upgrades and disable features to get a new OS to work smooth on there current hardware, A new OS should be faster not slower, look at Linux / Mac OS, a new version comes out and it generaly adds more features and improves the speed of the OS, Microsoft just seems to do this backwards.
Now if it wasnt for Direct X can you all honastly say you would still use Windows?, I know if all developers started to do there games in OpenGL I would be looking seriously at Linux and maybe even a Macbook Pro.

Re: The Mojave Experiment

If I could I would still be using DOS.

Granted it was dog ugly and not the most user friendly os but it was fast and reliable and you don't have all these blooming driver updates and patches like you do these days although perhaps that's down to the fact at the time the Internet wasn't really around and so there was no easy way to distribute them.

I can honestly say in terms of the windows os xp is by far the one I have liked most.

For me it just installed flawlessly has very rarely crashed compared to the others and as already mentioned its faster then Vista.

Yes vista looks pretty and has dx10 but for me that's not enough for me to switch considering its slower then xp and again already mention has loads of annoying things like confirming ur actions a lot and even now certain programs don't seem to be fully compatible with it.

OK you can turn the confirm action of but in my mind you shouldn't have to and if anything it should be a option to turn the darn thing on in the first place and not as standard.

If I do ever need dx10 then I will dual boot and only install those programs for vista and use xp for the rest.

You should only be getting UAC prompts regularly when you're first setting everything up; after that you should be able to go days without seeing one under normal use.

Re: The Mojave Experiment

Was pretty happy with Vista until about 4 seconds ago when it fails to let me install CoD4 or Crysis... or any game. Comes up with some stupid message about not being able to find the file and then giving me the option to retry or cancel, press retry and it carries on installing but fails to finish at the last leg and freezes.

Re: The Mojave Experiment

I have to deal with it on a regular basis. I loathe it. It is not fast, its bloated, I would have to spend more time turning everything off, removing all of the useless crap and just getting it to work than I would installing the damn thing.

I should not have to be coaxed to use it, quite frankly there is not one single thing I look at with respects to Vista and think "That would make my life easier" or "Hey, thats cool"
