I love zombie games, plain and simple.
I'm sure that in a 'real' zombie apocalypse things would be chaotic, treacherous and down right nasty but that's not what this piece is about. This is about why I love zombie games and where my fascination in them began.

Zombie game affectionado here :D

Been playing zombie games a good long time. Bought Resident Evil and been playing 'em ever since. I think for me it's fun to have a guilt-free enemy to kill.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like I feel a pang of guilt about stabbing some bastard attached to a huge set of sideburns in the jugular and I definitely don't feel guilty about introducing noobs to the contents of my shotgun in multiplayer. But you can brag about killing zombies to just about anyone you know who plays games and maybe even some friends who don't play vidya (although if you do decide to disclose to people how many virtual undead you've killed in the most obscene of ways, do make sure they are aware of how messed up you are and don't expect to be praised for it either :P)

You can't save zombies, you can't reason with them and they just want to eat you. You have every reason to kill them, and more, since you'll be putting the person they once were to rest/protecting the world from their menace/charging into a horde of them with a huge parasol.

But I will agree with Kaostic; they do often make me panic in games. Despite them being shambling, noisy, stinking, moaning corpses they do manage to get the drop on almost any protagonist at some point

You've hit the nail on the head there, Renthar. I can shoot them all day long and feel no sort of regret. I'm helping them pass into peace.

Out of interest, what zombie games have you been playing recently? Infected included.

Mate of mine is raving about an indie title called Project Zomboid.

Low budget, top down survival sim but looks really interesting. I think it's either in late Alpha or early Beta, but worth a look for zombie fans.

I always gravitate back to Left 4 Dead 2 eventually, since I have 2 friends who can handle expert realism levels and a few other friends who can hack expert. It's a fantastic game and (along with L4D1) is an excellent example of randomly generated content done right.

Besides that; Killing Floor (got to get back in to learn the weapons :P), Resident Evil 5/6 (yes, capcom's plots are insane, but I have fun with them), The Walking Dead (gonna give that a blast soon, wanna play it through in 1-2 long sittings) and I was thinking of ploughing through Dead Space 2's Hard Core Mode...again.

Been plenty disappointed by zombie games as well though. I really did not enjoy Dead Island. Even though I pre-ordered it and went into it expecting to like it. Not a huge fan of Call of Duty's Zombie mode either, although haven't tried Blops 2's version.

As for Dayz, I made a decision at the end of last year to buy the standalone. I'm sticking to my guns...until august :P

If you want to be disappointed, play the walking dead.

I presume you mean TWD: Survival Instinct - as Telltale's Walking Dead is awesome!

Yes, Survival Instinct. Telltale's is amazing, but I've yet to complete it. Still on Episode 3.
