Wanting a small server...
Right im wanting to get a nice small server setup in my new apartment to share all my media around the house as i use my laptop to watch things on both the upstairs and downstairs PC's
I will most likely be putting my current extra SATA drives in it and will be adding more as time goes by.
Anyone got any ideas of a half decent spec which is also cheap :S

If its just gonna be used for sharing, go for a bog standard celeron setup, with plenty of value ram. Might be worth getting a gigabit nic card(or two), and plenty of SATA Space.
Might be worth going for a board thats got SATA Raid onboard?

hmmmm so say
cheap celly/sepron cpu
cheapo mobo
512mb ram
only need 10/100 nic as router dont do gig and will mostly be sharing over wireless
What ruff specs for that? i shud be able to pick up that quite cheap tbh! then just need to find a huge case that i can dump loads of HDD's in im not bothered about Raid and stuff as it will just be soley for media storage and nothing more!

how many users are we talking about? 5? i doubt there would be that many server requests at once to need a gigabit nic, (dont forget you need a gigbit switch too). after all hdds only really move what... 40mbs?
but as for the system spec, yeah i agree with milky

worth noting, if your seriously stapped for cash, do what i did. pick up a P2 500 off ebay for 15 quid, and slap 2*250gb IDE's in it. (mighthave to get an off board IDE controller tho as older controllers dont support 40gb+ .... do they rash? ¬_¬)

Buying a cheap server setup myself actualy from a mate at work, 1800 XP CPU, mobo and ram ect, gonna basicly do the same, whack it in a big case and just fill the case full of hard drives, i.e dont sell any old drives just add to them, should eventualy add up to a nice server with pleanty of space
Also thinking of putting this IDE raid card I have to use and getting a couple of IDE drives for mirroring for inportent data.

If you're using a router or hub then go for an external hard drive. Would be cheaper than building a server.

But would be resticted to just that HDD, i want a server as i will be needing lots of HDD space. I will also be taking out my current storage drives out of my gaming pc and just leaving my raptor in there...

But how much space do you need? Even a 500G external hard drive would be cheaper than 500G worth of hard drives in a server. Unless you need more than that, in which case go for the server.
