Parental Control Software

My home pc's are breeding, and for Christmas wifey and I have agreed to get our 9 year old daughter a netbook.
In the past I didn't have any major concerns because our 2 pc's are located in the same area and was easy to keep an eye on activity.
Due to the portability of the netbook I would like to give her a bit of freedom with it, i.e. use it while she's watching TV, etc, btw yes she can multitask at this early age.
I am basically looking for a program thatís preferably free where I can control the access a little better than windows default security. Her main uses will be YouTube and our friendly Google search engine, and her favourite hobby/ subject is anything to do with Horses. (I want to avoid her seeing things that might pop up if she for example had a typo )
Any recommendations from users of these programs are appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Parental Control Software

You can use OpenDNS for this, ive been using it for years, very reliable and trusted service.

The FamilyShield is the simplest option, protects from adult content, phishing scams, some malware etc, free to sign up and simple to setup to.

EDIT : If you want more control over whats blocked etc instead of just a quick solution, you can do OpenDNS Basic instead, just requires a bit more setup and management : http://www.opendns.com/solutions/household/

Re: Parental Control Software

some more

K9 Web (its Free)
Net Nanny This is a very old school program, has been around for years, cost = $30

Also i use a program called Teamviewer
This program isn't a parent control, but what it does do is allows you to remote in, OR just view what they are doing (remote with no interaction)

The pure fact my kids know this is on their PC, tells them i can remote in any time i like, so it makes them that little bit more careful when they think they can get away with something.
btw - i tell my kids they have teamviewer on and it acts like a deterrent to them more than having to use it.
(plus you can remote in to install software for them or look at problems)

+1 for OpenDNS. It works and it's free. Why pay more?

Re: Parental Control Software

just a question would the netbook be powerfull enough to have an extra software running on it as well as surfing the net to play movies. As i know some of the struggle to even run movies.

Just asking thats all

That is a bloody good point, didn't think to ask that, if its an older notebook, oBladeo is correct, you may have issues.
Let us know

That would be (and i would put money on this) your dad didn't set it up correct.
A lot of the problems aren't the parent control software, its the parents not being able to use it and the kids knowing PC better than their parents.

Think it should be ok if the progam is not too demanding.

Re: Parental Control Software

Thats the beauty of OpenDNS, no software to install or setup, just some configuration changes and youre good to go.

Nah, my dad did set it up correctly. He is fairly technically advanced in contrast to some other parents. But yeah, didn't take me long to get round it.
