Talking New Guy

Alright everyone?

My name is Rob Gisbey, I’m 26 and live in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK. I’m a freelance games journalist and music production graduate.

I have played and loved video games for as long as I can remember, ever since I first got my hands on a NES as a child. Since then I have purchased almost every console that’s been released and followed the games industry intently.

I currently own a Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, iPhone and DS and my all-time favourite game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Until recently I was working for Analog Addiction but have just moved over to GamesGrin where I've joined their writing staff.

Music has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve played in a slew of different bands over the years and still enjoy writing and recording my own compositions using my home studio setup. As well as singing I play several instruments including guitar, bass, piano and drums amongst others.

I'm also a massive fan of serialised television, my favourite shows being Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Walking Dead and The Wire.

If you want to peruse some of my writing, listen to my gaming podcast and check out my music then head to my website - robgisbey.com

Thanks for reading everyone and I hope to get to know you all very soon.

Rob

Re: New Guy

Hey Rob, welcome to the forums and the team .

It's interesting that you include iPhone in your list of consoles (above a dedicated gaming device (DS)). Do you consider it a viable gaming device nowadays then or is it still something left for the casuals?

You also seem to be quite the aficionado in the music scene.. Having played so many instruments, how do you feel about games such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band or the latest, Rocksmith?

Re: New Guy

Cheers Harrie. You too Kaostic.

It's weird. I don't ever play my DS but I play my iPhone quite a bit. I think it's just 'cause it's always with me. I know a lot of people aren't keen on mobile but I think it can be decent. The recent Limbo port on IOS works wonderfully for example. Well worth checking out and a great excuse to play it again.

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of Guitar Hero or Rock Band at all. They really don't do anything for me. Rocksmith is a cool idea though. I mean, I wouldn't buy it myself but if it does what it sets out to do I'm all for it.

I agree for the most part. It's a device that is always for you and has more power than my old consoles do. I play some games on my phone but they are nearly always casual. D'you ever think it will be anything more than that? A casual device?

If you're already a decent guitar player, the only thing you'll really get out of Rocksmith is either playing the mini games (which are fairly fun tbh) or the feeling of playing Guitar Hero with a real guitar. It's a good game though, shame it costs so much.

Re: New Guy

Awesome.

I'm kind of an all-rounder. The only genres I'm not overly into are driving and beat 'em ups (unless they're Mario Kart and Smash Bros) Lol.

What about you?

Honestly my taste in both music and games are pretty eclectic. I think there's material in most genres that I'd really enjoy.

Right now I'm writing a feature and listening to This Binary Universe by BT. I'm also really enjoying Hi Beams by Javelin at the moment. (^_^)-b

How many members of staff are there currently at GamesGrin?

Re: New Guy

Welcome Rob mate, glad to see you on the forums.

Just so you know, Majora's Mask was better than Ocarina of Time.

If you like gaming on the iPhone I would suggest XCOM: Enemy Unknown as a recommendation. It's pricey, but what you are getting for your cash is the full PC/Console game (minus a few unnecessary cinematic sequences).
