virus land.... How do i stop it?

Got a big question...

How do you stop people installing viruses?

My wifes step dad and brother have a pc that they use. I have installed

windows 7 (turned uac to full)
symantec anti virus
mcaff anti virus

They need to be able to install programs but they keep getting viruses and nothing catches em :s.

The one i fixed today was a boot virus and even windows 7 repair failed.

Re: virus land.... How do i stop it?

May I suggest running only one anti virus software and using a decent one such as NOD32.

Some people are really that bad with computers they will easily install viruses, the few cases of blocked attacks I have had with NOD32 have been basically handled for me and the only action I have had is the option to submit to ESET to verify if it's a new type of virus or is a false positive.

Running more and more residential scanning anti-virus programs utilizes more memory and can easily conflict each other operating properly.

Not intended as humorous, but the only real answer to this question is:

"Stop people using computers"

Unfortunately, this has to be the case as viruses are increasingly devious about the way they infect systems, making it harder to spot them coming. It may be laborious on your part, but get them to tell you what programs they are about to install, if it seems suspicious, advise them against installing it.

Other than that, Neo makes a good point about only using one piece of AV software and that it's a decent one.

Re: virus land.... How do i stop it?

The problem is i suggested this pc to them as it was cheap to buy and very fast and they keep saying theres something wrong with the pc when there isn't. So it makes me look bad....

If there system goes down again i think i'm going to turn it into a locked down system. So they can't install anything and have to ask me when they want to install anything.

Re: virus land.... How do i stop it?

I never really understand why people get infected with viruses so easily. I've always just used AVG free and the Windows firewall and I've never been infected with any virus.

Re: virus land.... How do i stop it?

No, I hadn't forgotten that but I wasn't counting it as it wasn't a virus as such. My machine was never infected.

It was a hotmail hack of some sort. I hadn't changed my password on that account for years. I've changed it now and it hasn't reoccurred.
