Unsecured Wireless Networks..
Would you use one if it was there?
There is an unsecured network within range of our house. I am unsure wether to use it or not, only until our 'net is back up next week though.
Are there any legal issues surrounding this? I not hacking in as its an "open" network.
I know you could say, "Would you take something physical if someones door was open" but thats a different issue.. Right??

Re: Unsecured Wireless Networks..
Go nuts.
Actually don't go nuts, it's their bandwidth so play nice and don't abuse it by starting up a load of torrents and playing 3 youtube videos at the same time. A bit of web browsing, email checking and msn is perfectly acceptable though imo.

Re: Unsecured Wireless Networks..
tbh if its not secured then yeh pikey it for browsing etc till your's is back up. I mean you can get wifi connections at starbucks/maccy d's these days anways so i dont see the problem in using that open connection.

Re: Unsecured Wireless Networks..
Think about it from a different point of view; if you left your network open for some reason, would you want others using it?
I've gone for 4, as I've done it before to hotels free access when not staying at the hotel. Was a few years back and cheaper than an internet cafe for collecting email
I've hunted people down around where I live before to tell them to stop being nubs and secure their networks.

Re: Unsecured Wireless Networks..
Use it until your internet gets back, Then tell them as anybody can obtain information involving their computers which include Credit Card Details etc. through a Wireless network...

+1.
Many articles and debates have been made about this particular subject. While not illegal by anyway, they are a little bit un-ethical. As mole have suggested, would you feel ok if someone used your open wireless connection?
I say use it, it is open but as long as they have an unlimited access to the internet. You wouldn't want your neighbor using up all your quota, would you?

Oh! I never knew that. Would it be too much to ask which country is applying that law?
Thank you for correcting me.

Some people don't even know the basics of network services, wireless or any of those things. I know my father doesn't, i had to teach him how to open/close computer and do all that stuff. Some people aren't like most of us here...

New routers should come with security features enabled, although the default's have to be adjusted to prevent people from grabbing the defaults off the internet and getting in anyway.

Do you buy a new central heating system and install it yourself without at the very BARE MINIMUM guidance?
No you don't.
Why does everyone assume I.T is any different. Ignorance is not an excuse.

+1.
People are retarded to think that just because they managed to work out how to use their Mobile Phone, that they are able to get a wireless network working.
Ignorance is no excuse, If they leave it open (without before sorting advice); it is their own fault to what can happen - whether it is legal or not.
You HAVE to secure your wireless network.

Tbh that's a bit like saying a small shop run by an old lady with no CCTV or security is free game for shop lifters in the eyes of the law.
Their ignorance isn't an excuse to break the law. A law being broken is still a law being broken however much you try to sugarcoat it.

The metaphor would be more along the lines of:
Leaving your goods on the front step with a green flashing light indicating their presence.
DHCP is an invitation to get an IP address (regardless of the law)
